BBC Radio on iPad and iPhone overseas

Friday, August 19th, 2011

The BBC iPlayer app for iPad does not let you watch TV or listen to Radio when overseas. The TV is not allowed for licensing reasons and the Radio is not available according to the website as:

“we don’t have the capacity to serve radio content (live or listen again) to mobile devices overseas.”

This wouldn’t be an issue if you could use the links straight from the BBC website on an iOS device. There is a workaround however to listen to the BBC Radio when outside the UK on an iPad.

The BBCStreams.com website has a tutorial explaining how to add the BBC Radio audio streams onto an iPhone app called FStream (from SourceMac) that can play the BBC Radio stations live on your iPad or iPhone.

They are also working on their own app to allow you to listen to the radio without the configuration required with the current FStream app.

iPhone 4 / iPad software update (iOS 4.2)

iOS 4.2 iPhone Software

Apple have released iOS version 4.2 for iPhone and iPad at 1800 GMT today.  The main advantage of the upgrade is for iPad users who now get many of the features that have been on the iPhone 4 since launch.  The key ones being multi-tasking and the ability to organise apps into folders.

For iPhone 4 users who have these features already the next biggest features are AirPrint (the ability to print from the iOS devices to network enabled printers) and AirPlay (the ability to stream audio and video across the network) which replaces AirTunes (the ability to stream audio only).  The best example is watching a movie on the iPad or iPhone and then streaming it onto an HD TV through the Apple TV.  This feaure is only supported on the new Apple TV (not the old Apple TV) and the Airport Express.  There will be support for 3rd party players in the future, a break from the Apple only situation with AirTunes.

For those without a MobileMe account there is now a free feature to locate missing iOS devices and remotely wipe or lock the device “Find My iPhone”.  The final tweaks are minor, replying to invites in calendar, changing fonts in Notes, changing Message notification tone for different users and the ability to rent TV Shows in HD (previously just for HD Movies).

The 624MB download is installed via iTunes and available for free.

Apple iPad

After being probably the most talked about hardware for years and the most hyped since the iPhone, Apple had launched the iPad.

Like a large form factor iPhone ot iPod Touch the iPad is based heavily around the App Store and a new (if clumsy sounding)  iBookStore for getting eBooks in the ePub format.

The screen is 1024 x 768 resolution and multi-touch support is the same as the iPhone.  There will be 16, 32 and 64GB models to choose from in two lines, one Wi-Fi only and the other Wi-Fi and 3G (data).  It remains to be seen whether VoIP applications will work in the absence of a phone capability.  Presumably omitted so not to cannibalise sales of the iPhone.  Prices start at $499 with UK prices yet to be confirmed.

The picture shows the first of a wave of accessories with a docking keyboard for when you tire of the virtual on-screen affair.  Battery life is claimed to be 10 hours which should make for a good film playback device but a poorer ebook reader.
