Samsung has been adding T-DMB technology to just about every type of device they make. The technology is based on the DAB standard and has been included in mobile phones, PDAs and PC monitors. A competing technology DVB-H is being developed based on the DVB-T standard used by Freeview.

HD Radio has taken off in the USA, to such an extent that apparently several European counties are looking at switching from DAB to the IBOC digital radio. Cleverly they have cashed in on the HD High Definition branding, used with HDTV, but the official version is something like Hybrid Definition (right, whatever).

HD Radio Coverage MapThe coverage is already quite extensive, and the technology is attractive compared to DAB since there is no need to allocate new frequencies. Instead, (hold on, here comes the Science bit…) the digital signal is combined with the analogue one and sent in the sidebands.
