However, by default iMovie will not let you use a networked disk such as an Air Disk. This can be enabled through using a terminal command:

I received an error that the CNQL2406_ClassicNotSeize.kext was not installed correctly. Turns out after a bit of internet digging, that the file isn’t even required anymore and was installed with a previous version of OS X to make our Canon Lide 60 scanner work. Would be useful if the dialog box told me that!  Quick solution is just to delete the file from the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder.

Having driven past Corfe Castle today I remembered playing an educational game at primary school with the object of building a Norman motte and bailey castle.  The game ran on the school’s BBC Microcomputer, either a Model B or a Master.  After a little internet research, I came across the game Fletcher’s Castle.  A quick download of BeebEm (I tried Horizon, but that doesn’t have the BBC ROMs which are under copyright).

Sharp have been rumoured to be building screens for Apple’s future iPad 3.  The iPad 3 is expected to have a Retina-like display resolution.  The current iPad has a resolution of 1024 x 768 that equates to 132 pixels per inch (ppi).  This is similar to the iPhone 3GS which was the last pre-Retina iPhone.  It  was a 480 x 320 resolution at 163 ppi.  The screen for the iPhone 4 and carried onto the latest iPhone 4S was doubled in both directions to 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi.

There are sound compatibility issues with doubling the resolution in both directions since low resolution apps can easily be scaled to work on high resolution screens.  It follows that the same approach would be taken when upgrading the iPad to a higher resolution in the future.  An iPad 3 with a doubled resolution would be 2048 x 1536 with a 264 ppi assuming no change in the physical size of the screen.

This would give an iPad 3 some 3.1M pixels, compared with 0.6M pixels on an iPhone 4S.  Coupled with the physical size, this number of pixels would require a second backlight for the iPad 3 and add to battery life – as would the pixel count.  The news that Sharp may be providing an LCD screen based on IGZO (indium, gallium, zinc oxide) technology.

Improve application responsiveness with BranchCache

• Increase branch office user productivity. BranchCache in Windows 7 helps increase the network responsiveness of applications, giving users in remote offices an experience more like working in the head office. When accessing content stored on Windows Server 2008 R2, users in a branch office don’t need to wait as long to download files from headquarters. When IT enables BranchCache, a copy of data accessed from an intranet website or a file server is cached locally within the branch office. When another user on the same network requests the file, the user gets access to the content almost immediately as it is downloaded from the local cache rather than over a limited bandwidth connection back to headquarters.
• Flexible architecture. BranchCache only serves content to users who have the right permissions and always checks to make sure it is delivering the latest version of the file. BranchCache can operate in one of two modes. In Hosted Cache mode, a server in the branch running Windows Server 2008 R2 hosts the cached files. In the second mode, Distributed Cache, a branch server is not required; copies of files are directly cached on PCs in the branch and sent to other Windows 7 clients as needed.
• Versatile and efficient protocols. BranchCache only retrieves data from headquarters when the user requests it. Because it is a passive cache, it decreases bandwidth utilization between headquarters and the branch. BranchCache only caches read requests, so it will never interfere with a user saving a file. BranchCache supports common protocols for web content (HTTP and HTTPS) and file servers (server messaging block [SMB]), enabling it to work with a wide variety of application types. Finally, it works seamlessly with network security technologies, including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), SMB signing, and Internet Protocol security (IPsec) to improve application performance even if the content is encrypted.

CloudFlare provides free and paid-for services that can enhance your website performance.  The key to the service is a Content Delivery Network that aims to speed up your site but has added benefits such as: some protection from Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks; Optimising code for mobile browsers; Usage Statistics and providing additional services (Like global Google Analytics or PunchTab loyalty programme) for free or a fee.  An example case study can be found here.

To change the ring time from your iPhone 4 you need to dial a code to change the ring time. First, go to the phone function and bring up the keypad. Second type the code below replacing NN with the number of seconds you want the iPhone to ring for before the Tesco Mobile Voicemail cuts in:

Note: The 905 number is the number to call Tesco Mobile Voicemail from your iPhone 4. If you want to use the number on a different mobile network exchange 905 for the code to call voicemail on that network.

This wouldn’t be an issue if you could use the links straight from the BBC website on an iOS device. There is a workaround however to listen to the BBC Radio when outside the UK on an iPad.

The BBCStreams.com website has a tutorial explaining how to add the BBC Radio audio streams onto an iPhone app called FStream (from SourceMac) that can play the BBC Radio stations live on your iPad or iPhone.

They are also working on their own app to allow you to listen to the radio without the configuration required with the current FStream app.
